This is a great trip down the North Santiam River. It's a good trip for the beginner, providing they have someone with experience along to guide them. Plenty of smooth areas, but still some exciting areas to make the trip very memorable. There are many put outs along the way so you can determine your own desired length of trip. The Boy Scout group I was with chose to go the 8.5 mile to the Fisherman's Bend camp grounds down river where we camped. A great time was had by all. It's a one way trip, so bring more than one car.
Parking/put-in/launching information: The park is contiguous to land leased by the State Fish Commission for a salmon egg collection station. The Park and Recreation Commission named the park "Packsaddle" because Packsaddle Creek flows through the area. The park is primarily used by drift boaters, fishermen, and sightseers. There is a restroom, picnic tables, fire pits, water activities, fishing, boat ramp, and is ADA accessible.
Paddling conditions to be expected: Flat to mild dips
Difficulty of the trip: any level, but beginners should have someone experienced along to show them how to take the drops.
Length of trip: variable; ours was 8.5
Portages: we passed at least five before we put out
Permits required: none for the water, but you do need to pay for the campground if you choose to use it
Type of trip: one way; need to shuttle
Take-out Coordinates: Not Listed
