Josef Toufar was a parish priest in Cíhošt, diocese of Hradec Králové, Czech Republic. During Mass on 11 December 1949, parishioners saw a heavy iron cross move on its own on the altar; Father Josef did not see it. At that time, Communist authorities were cracking down on Catholicism in Czechoslovakia; they arrested Josef, and tortured him into claiming he had installed a mechanical device to move the cross and fool the parishioners. The interrogations were so brutal that he did not survive. His Cause for Canonization as a martyr has opened.
