South Hill is a railroad town and was founded because it is halfway between Raleigh to Richmond by rail. Locally grown cotton and tobacco was shipped from here by rail. Passenger traffic was served by this depot, now restored. The depot is the home of a model train museum, doll museum and the chamber of commerce.
