This impressive piece of public art is located in central Jakarta. It symbolises the Indonesian struggle for independence from the Dutch. The sculpture consists of a farmer (he wears a traditional farmer's hat, hence, it is also known as the Farmer Statue), in the guise of a soldier, with his mother offering her son a bowl of rice. Each statue is several times life-sized, and both are made of bronze. There is a plaque on the plinth, which reads:
"HANJA BANGSA JANG MENGHARGAI PAHLAWAN PAHLAWANNJA DAPAT MENJADI BANGSA JANG BESAR"
English: "ONLY A NATION WHICH RESPECTS ITS HEROES IS A GREAT NATION
The new nations's first president, Sukarno, ordered the creation of the statue. It was crafted in the Soviet Union by Matvey Manizer and his son Ossip Manizer, who took their inspiration from local Indonesian folk lore. The statue was dedicated in 1963.
