This geologic history sign is located on the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway at Elk Lake, Oregon.
Marker Name: Goodbye Lake, Hello Meadow
Marker Text: Sparks Lake formed nearly 10,000 years ago and was close to 700 acres - it is now half that size.
At the south end, the deepest point reaches a maximum depth of 10 feet.
At the north end, the lake has filled in and is becoming a wetland and meadow. Streams have deposited sediment into the lake. Ancient volcanic eruptions once added sediment in the form of tephra - pumice, ash and cinder that fell from the air.
As sediment continues to be deposited in layers, Sparks Lake will become Sparks Meadow.
