This sculpture is carved out of columnar basalt. It is polished in places and left raw in others. in some areas birdsa are carved into the stone. Part of the grouping is a small fountain carved from a portion of a basalt column.

This is a functional sculpture carved from columnar basalt. It's located in a mini courtyard at the entrance to the Dumas Bay Centre and Knutsen Family Theatre, both owned by the city of Federal Way. The basalt pieces are set in a ring with portions scooped out of the rock and polished for seating. Engraved in the horizontal stones are flying birds. Near the opening of the ring of stone is a fountain, also carved from basalt and next to that a basalt column, left in its natural state, and standing upright. The piece was commissioned by the Federal Way Arts Commission in 1998.
The sculptor's website says this of his work: "John's sculptures and installations are based on the naturally occurring characteristics of stone and other earth products. Through carving and polishing, he both reveals and enhances the shapes and lines of the stones. He often uses gradation of texture, from natural surfaces to highly finished areas, to highlight the intrinsic beauty of the stone."
