"The Lion Tower, is one of the ancient towers on the walls of medieval Pisa. Today, the tower is at the same height of the walls, having suffered the same fate as other city towers with the occupation of Florence in 1406 : at that time it was customary to bring down the towers of the city taken as a symbol of power.
The name probably derives from an Etruscan sculpture representing a lion. This statue was originally placed in a niche outside the walls next to the tower itself.
The tower can be seen from the inside of the Piazza del Duomo, and is adjacent to a door now closed."
