Conundrum font of Notre- Dame de Niort

Dated to the lower part of the early sixteenth century and the nineteenth to the top.

Pentagonal tank
Did you know? the tank has been thoroughly by a certain Joseph Salvini study.
Subject: the number of sides and iconography particularly developed . The plan of the baptismal font is usually either circular or polygonal with an even number , 4, 6 or 8 most often.
Niort is part of the exceptions with 5 sides.
The other novelty is its iconography. 5 topics are covered : the flood and Noah's ark , Moses striking the rock to bring forth water ( symbol found in the catacombs ) , Naaman , commander of the army of the king of Syria was cured of leprosy by immersion in the Jordan River on the orders of the prophet Elisha ( see commentary Jacques Lefebvre ) , Christ baptized in the Jordan by John the Baptist , the healing of the paralytic at the pool or Probatic Bézatha .

But why 5 episodes narrated in 5 gantries.
Must , according to our author, to dwell on the story of the healing of the paralytic, the design of the pool is strangely one of our tank. Each side is pierced with a Gothic door brace . An angel appeared in the sky. Inside, you should see the head of a patient , arm raised , gloating seems to be the first to enter and see the angel. _ On the outside, we see the paralytic left , seated, a crutch to his feet and right another patient probably asleep by the length of the wait.
Bézatha pool , which was located north of Jerusalem near the door called " Probatic " had five porticoes well as the text of St. John, as confirmed by archaeological excavations of the nineteenth .

In the manuscripts where the episode is shown from the eleventh century , the pool takes the form of a circular tank , then square. A fifteenth century Flemish tapestry called " the glorious Virgin ," allegory of baptism in 3 parts , the Virgin in the center stands before a baptismal font 5 sides. It is 1485. We find this design on other works of the sixteenth century.

This form could be inspired by a search for archaeological realism in connection with the nascent humanism.
But not only that: The Catechism of Trent , published in 1566 , reported 4 episodes to symbolize baptism : the flood, the passage of the Red Sea, the episode of Naaman and Probatic pool. We find 3 of the font of Niort.

Enigme des fonts baptismaux de Notre-Dame de Niort

Datés pour la partie basse du début du XVIè siècle et du XIXè pour la partie haute.

Une cuve pentagonale
Le saviez vous ? la cuve a fait l’objet d’une étude approfondie par un certain Joseph Salvini.
Objet : le nombre de côtés et l’iconographie particulièrement développée. Le plan des fonts baptismaux est généralement soit circulaire soit polygonal avec un nombre pair, 4, 6 ou 8 le plus souvent.
Celui de Niort fait partie des exceptions avec 5 côtés.
L’autre originalité est son iconographie. 5 sujets sont traités : le déluge et l’arche de Noé, Moïse frappant le rocher pour en faire jaillir l’eau (symbole retrouvé dans les catacombes), Naaman, chef de l’armée du roi de Syrie qui est guéri de la lèpre par immersion dans le Jourdain sur ordre du prophète Elisée (voir le commentaire de Jacques Lefebvre), le Christ baptisé dans le Jourdain par Jean Baptiste, la guérison du paralytique à la piscine probatique ou de Bézatha.

Mais pourquoi 5 épisodes relatés sous 5 portiques.
Il faut, selon notre auteur, s’attarder sur l’épisode de la guérison du paralytique : le dessin de la piscine correspond étrangement à celui de notre cuve. Chaque côté est percé d’une porte gothique en accolade. Un ange paraît dans le ciel. A l’intérieur, on devrait voir la tête d’un malade qui, le bras levé, semble jubiler d’être entré le premier et regarde l’ange. _ A l’extérieur, on voit à gauche le paralytique, assis, une béquille à ses pieds et à droite un autre malade assoupi sans doute par la longueur de l’attente.
La piscine de Bézatha, qui était située au nord de Jérusalem près de la porte dite « Probatique » avait bien 5 portiques selon le texte de saint Jean, forme confirmée d’ailleurs par les fouilles archéologiques du XIXè.

Dans les manuscrits où l’épisode est représenté à partir du XIè siècle, la piscine prend l’aspect d’une cuve circulaire, puis carré. Sur une tapisserie flamande du XVè siècle intitulée « la Vierge glorieuse », allégorie du baptême en 3 volets, la Vierge au centre se tient devant une cuve baptismale à 5 côtés. On est en 1485. On retrouve ce dessin sur d’autres œuvres du XVIè siècle.

Cette forme pourrait être inspirée par une recherche de réalisme archéologique en lien avec l’humanisme naissant.
Mais pas seulement : Le catéchisme du Concile de Trente, publié en 1566, fait état de 4 épisodes pour symboliser le baptême : le déluge, le passage de la mer rouge, l’épisode de Naaman et la piscine probatique. Nous en retrouvons 3 sur les fonts baptismaux de Niort.
