The U.S. Life Saving Station was built in 1891 as a replacement for the original, much smaller, station. It was an important part of the coastal community because of the many shipwrecks and storms that have happened here over the years. The U.S. Coast guard used this station from 1915 until 1964, but after they left the building began to deteriorate. The Station was on the verge of being torn down when a group of citizens banded together to save it for it's historic value. The building was moved to its present day location, renovated, and is now a landmark museum. The Ocean City Life Saving Station Museum opened on December 25, 1978.
