Samuel Copeland was a native of Thompson, CT who came to Worcester in 1838 as the foreman at the Providence Screw Company. That company moved to Rhode Island, Copeland became a tool maker at Washburn Wire Mill. He then worked at the Court Mills for the firm of Thompson, Skinner & Co. In 1865, Copeland began manufacturing hardware on his own forming the Copeland Hardware Manufacturing Company. He claimed to have made the first iron planning machine ever used. In 1863 Copeland sold the property to David Scott, a druggist.
