EN: The Wettstein house is located quite hidden in the middle of a residential area in Klein-Basel. When it was built in 1571, it was a vineyard cottage in the fields outside the city walls. The name was given the building because it allegedly once it was agift from the city of Basel to Johann Rudolf Wettstein for his efforts in the Peace of Westphalia; but there is no historical evidence for this. Since the end of the 19th century, until today, the picturesque cottage has been used by several artists, including the famous sculptors Hans Frei and Alexander Zschokke.
The house has a square ground plan with a side length of only 5 meters. The brick ground floor was originally intended for the storage of agricultural equipment, the slightly overlapping half-timbered upper floor contained a lounge. A very special feature for a vineyard cottage is the brick stair tower.
DE: Das Wettsteinhäuschen befindet sich ziemlich versteckt mitten in einem Wohnquartier im Kleinbasel. Als es 1571 gebaut wurde, befand es sich als Rebhäuschen in den Feldern vor den Stadtmauern. Den Namen erhielt das Bauwerk, weil es angeblich einst Johann Rudolf Wettstein für seinen Einsatz im Westfälischen Frieden von der Stadt Basel geschenkt worden sein soll; dafür gibt es aber keine historischen Belege. Seit dem Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts bis heute ist das malerische Häuschen von verschiedenen Künstlern benutzt worden, darunter auch die bekannten Bildhauer Hans Frei und Alexander Zschokke.
Das Haus hat eine quadratischen Grundriss mit einer Seitenlänge von nur 5 Metern. Das gemauerte Erdgeschoss war ursprünglich zur Lagerung von landwirtschaftlichen Geräten vorgesehen, das leich überstehende Fachwerk-Obergeschoss enthielt einen Aufenthaltsraum. Als Besonderheit ist dieses Rebhäuschen mit einem gemauerten Treppentürmchen ausgestattet.
