To ensure that water and sewer pipes were installed at the correct depth, 46 cast iron bench marks were placed at key locations in and around Adelaide in 1879.
Many have been removed but a handful still remain like this one located in Victoria Square.
It's still on the survey marks register as 6628/4174.
Victoria Square was amidst a redevelopment while I visited but I have read that this benchmark is to be retained even if it is mostly buried in a garden bed, beside a building which looks very much like a public toilet.
