The reverse side of this gold 10 Litas coin depicts the Gate of Dawn (Aušros Vartai), one of the most important religious, historical and cultural monuments of Vilnius and also interesting example of Renaissance fortification architecture.
Renaissance Gate of Dawn, one of 9 defensive gates constructed in 1503-1522, is the tallest one and was built in the most dangerous place in case of attacks. In 1799 Russians destroyed the Vilnius fortification together with all gates except of Gate of Dawn. It is thought that they were scared to demolish the place where the blessed painting was located. Thus, the Gate survived. The Gate of Dawn ís the object of even European religious importance thanks to well known miracle painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy, which is located in the chapel lately added on the town's side of the Gate.
