Taras Shevchenko was the National Poet of Ukraine and a champion
of justice and freedom for all.
The bronze statue by New York sculptor Andrew Dragan assisted by Winnipeg sculptor Roman Kowal was dedicated on July 9, 1971.
The statue shows Taras Shevchenko seated. He is wearing a suit with an overcoat draped over his shoulders. His right hand is resting on his right knee and his left hand is resting on an open book that is sitting on his left knee.
On the front of the stone base of the statue is the inscription 'Taras Shevchenko'. Embedded in the front and two sides of the base is a bronze relief showing mostly men with some women, mostly standing with some sitting. Some are bound.
On the back of the base is a bilingual (English/Ukrainian) bronze plaque.
