In 1789, 9 Deering residents gathered to create the Deering Congregational Church. During its first four decades services were held in the meetinghouse across the street. In 1829 the membership voted to build a new church, the present building to separate themselves from the Free Will Baptists, Universalists and Methodists, who combined to form the Free Salvation Society of Deering. The town and the church has had its ups and downs due to changing economies and population over the years.
