The town is named for the railroad tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt. The town is home to a handful of second hand shops, four or five churches, a post office, a small market, a gas station, and a fire department.
The Borough Building houses the borough office and council chambers and was once the home of the local post of the American Legion post before turning the post home over to the borough for their offices. The local post meets in the borough building as needed.
