Settling down of the oil boom to continue production of high grade Pennsylvania crude, the bulk of the historic district was constructed between 1880 and 1920. Due to several fires in an area heavy with stored petroleum, the law was changed around the turn of the 20th century to require brick construction.

The historic district covers 53 acres. It has 136 contributing buildings which are listed in the second secondary link below. The non-contributing buildings are the modern banks and couple of bridge structures. There are three separately listed NRHP properties which have already been waymarked in this category. Subsequent listings will be in the contributing category to capture the various design styles used in the downtown.

Coordinates provided are for Old City Hall, which has its own Waymark WMKZDQ, but clearly represents the historical nature of the downtown.
