The main character of Samuel Butler's "The Way of All Flesh", Ernest Pontifex, struggles throughout the novel with his religious tenets. At one point he decides to convert people in his apartment building. In Chapter 59, one of the tenants, A Mr. Shaw, challenges Ernest to give the St. John's account of the Resurrection. Ernest fails miserably. Mr. Shaw tells him to come back when he's up to the task. Ernest then goes to the British Museum's Reading Room and sends for the "Vestiges of Creation" and spent the afternoon reading it.
The novel is a fictionalized version of Butler's own autobiography.
