Remarks in the Siris listing: Maury Maverick, Sr., was Mayor of San Antonio from 1939 to 1941, also serving two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives during the Roosevelt administration. The $15,000 bust was commissioned by the City of San Antonio and the San Antonio Conservation Society, funded mostly through private funds raised by the San Antonio Conservation Society. The pedestal was fabricated by the Texas Granite Corporation of Marble Falls at an additional cost of $7,848, funded by the City of San Antonio.
From Wikipedia, we further learn the tidbit that Maverick, as head of the Smaller War Plants Corp., coined the term "gobbledygook" for obscure and euphemistic bureaucratic language. No more "finalizing contracts", "activation", or "implementation". (How would he love today's business and government language...)
