The plaque is on the first floor and reads, "Founded in 1607, Jamestown was the first permanent English Settlement in this county, and served as the first capital of the young colony. The three tiny ships, the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discovery, brought settlers to America. Virginia's first colonial legend is marked by statues of Captain John Smith and Pocahontas. As legend goes Captain Smith was captured by Indians and nearly slain. But the fair Pocahontas stepped between him and his executioners."
