America's Byways has classed 'El Camino Real' of significant interest and approved the route as a scenic byway.
Several trails are funnelled along this route, such as this featured trail 'El Camino Real De Tierra Adentro' 'The Turquoise Trail' and of course 'Historic Route 66' due to the Sandia mountains and the La Angostura Pass, which had to be negotiated.
From the American Byways Web Site:
"Cultures along El Camino Real De Tierra Adentro (The Royal Road of the Interior Land), are as diverse as its history and scenery. Pueblos reveal artisans crafting wares using centuries-old methods. The route, first travelled by Don Juan de Onate in 1598, provided news, supplies, and travel to the first capital of the New World." Text Source: (
