This little building was the Fathers' cold storage building at Pandosy Mission, used to store food and keep it cool, allowing storage of fruit and vegetables for the long, cold winter ahead. It was conveniently built right beside the chapel.

ROOT HOUSE

This unique original cedar dovetailed log building with a gable roof was built in 1865 by Brother Surel OMI.

It was used for storage of the fruit and vegetables that were grown on the farm.

It is constructed of two log walls with a four inch space in-between. The space was packed with dirt for insulation. This shows the intuitive knowledge of the insulation theory through use of dead air space.

It could be considered the first cold storage in the valley.

Immaculate Conception Mission

Founded in 1859 by Father Charles Marie Pandosy, an Oblate Missiomary, to serve the Native Okanagan People, this was the first Roman Catholic Mission in the interior of British Columbia.

Within the Okanagan Valley the mission was the first permanent non-native settlement, site of the first school and place where the first fruit and vine crops were grown.

Restored in 1958. Designated a Provincial Heritage Site in 1983. Operated by the Okanagan Historical Society.
