Schuyler Colfax's Journey to the west coast by stagecoach served to emphasize the need for a bi-coastal rail connection. He traveled up and down this area by horseback when no trains existed. After the Transcontintenal Railroad united the Atlantic and Pacific regions of the country, the Governon renamed Illinois-Town to Colfax in Schuyler's honor. This statue stands in the place where the first transcontinental railroad first stopped in Colfax.
