Evacustes A Phipson was born Edward Arthur Phipson in 1854 in King’s Norton. He changed his first name to Evacustes, a greek word meaning easy listener. He emigrated to Australia, but returned in 1889 to earn his living as a painter. He produced many paintings of local scenes across Britain. He died in Rye in 1931.

The buildings to the left of the paintings are now long gone. However, the listed building to the right in the foreground is the Kings House, believed to be where King James 1 stayed when in Royston, and is very much in existence today. The watercolour painting is in the Collection of St Albans Museum.
