The origins of the church date back to the 13th century. From this period comes the patronage of the church. Around the year 1206 at this place settled by Cistercian monks from the Polish Koprzywnica established the monastery dedicated to St. Giles. The Royal Charter of 1247, which King Béla IV. confirmed the order property of their extensive land near Bardejov ("Terra Bardfa"), contains the first mention of the existence of the church in this area.
