Marker 15-1 Old Jacksonborough First known as Pon Pon. Located on US Hwy 17 at Jacksonborough. Erected by Colleton County Historical Society in 1959.

Text: Founded about 1735 on lands granted John Jackson in 1701; county seat of Colleton District from 1799 to 1822. Provisional capital of state while Charleston was under siege in the closing months of the American Revolution. First South Carolina Legislature met here Jan.-Feb. 1782. Sessions held in Masonic Lodge and Tavern. Passed Confiscation and Amercement Acts.
