EN: Obertor (the upper gate) is part of the city fortification, that was built after the founding of Liestal in the 13th century.
While the major part of the city walls were replaced by buildings over the centuries, and the moat was filled up, solely the upper gate remained fairly close to its original state. Only the original battlements were replaced by a tiled roof with a turret in the 16th century.
The facade paintings were made by Otto Plattner, they were painted after an exterior renovation in 1950.
The upper gate is today the symbol of Liestal.
DE: Das Obertor ist Teil der im 13. Jahrhundert, nach der Stadtgründung, entstandenen Befestigungsanlage.
Während der grössere Teil der Stadtmauern durch Gebäude ersetzt wurden, und auch der Stadtgraben aufgefüllt wurde, blieb das Obertor als einziges ziemlich originalgetreu erhalten. Nur die ursprünglichen Zinnen wurden im 16. Jahrhundert durch ein Ziegeldach mit Reiter ersetzt.
Die Fassadenbemalungen stammen von Otto Plattner, sie wurden nach einer Aussenrenovation 1950 gemalt.
Das Obertor ist heute das Wahrzeichen von Liestal.
