EN: This grain elevator stands on the west bank of the harbor basin 1 in the Basel district Kleinhueningen. The silo was built in 1923 by Hans Bernoulli.
It was the first grain elevator at the port. The storage rooms have a volume of about 14,200 m3, which corresponds to about 11,000 tons of grain. The building is made of concrete with a brick shell, which not only has aesthetic reasons, but also serves for insulation. Bernoulli was inspired by Hamburg's warehouse district to do so.
The observation deck on the 45 meter high tower is accessible during guided tours of the port, it is also sometimes used for public events, e.g. an open-air cinema. During World War II it served as a airplane observation post of the Swiss army.
DE: Dieses Getreidesilo steht am Westufer des Hafenbeckens 1 im Basler Quartier Kleinhüningen. Das Silo wurde 1923 vom Hans Bernoulli erbaut.
Es war das erste Getreidesilo an diesem Hafen. Die Speicherräume haben ein Volumen von ca. 14'200 m3, was etwa 11'000 Tonnen Getreide entspricht. Das Gebäude ist aus Beton mit einer Backsteinhülle, die nicht nur ästhetischen Gründe hat, sondern auch der Isolation dient. Bernoulli wurde von der Hamburger Speicherstadt dazu inspiriert.
Die Aussichtsplattform auf dem 45 Meter hohen Turm ist im Rahmen von Hafenführungen zugänglich, sie wird auch manchmal für öffentliche Veranstaltungen genutzt, etwas einem Open-Air Kino. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg diente sie als Fliegerbeobachtungsposten der Schweizer Armee.
