Sign is located along the Crater Rim Trail at Lava Butte.
Marker Name: Northwest Rift Zone
Marker Text: Lava Butte is one of many cinder cones that erupted about 7,000 years ago from a northwest-trending fissure (crack) system known as the Northwest Rift Zone. The fissures extend nearly 17 miles from East Lake in Newberry Caldera to the northwest of Lava Butte. These fissures have created a zone of weakness where molten rock (magma) surfaced in several short eruptive episodes.
When you look across the landscape from here, notice the dark-colored, barren areas between Lava Butte and the rim of Newberry Volcano; these are the Northwest Rift Zone lava flows.
