Boston Common, the famous green space in Boston serves as the location for a scene on Election Day 1916 when Woodrow Wilson was re-elected President. The central character of this section of the novel, Richard Ellsworth Savage, is a student at Harvard who has been very concerned about and favoring Wilson's re-election. He has gone out to dinner with his roommate who doesn't care about the election. The roommate gets particularly drunk and they leave the restaurant to await election news at Boston Common from the bulletin bard on the Boston Herald Building. The roommate is so obnoxious that Savage needs to bring him somewhere else. The pair find a nearby bar...but service is refused. They eventually go back to Cambridge after hearing a (false) report that Wilson had lost the election.
"1919" is the 2nd book in John Dos Passos' trilogy "USA".
