The town square is in the block formed by Walnut, Locust, Broadway, and Main Streets, and this was the site of the previous courthouse.
A Confederate soldier stands about ten feet tall upon a base that is about twenty feet tall. He has a mustache, and is dressed in a knee-length coat with a high collar, and a cape. He holds his rifle by his side near the top of the barrel, the butt resting on the ground, and his other hand is on his waist. At the top of the base pedestal is the CSA monogram, with a Confederate battle flag and "In Memory of Our Confederate Soldiers" below it. On the base is "1861-1865" and "Confederate." On the reverse of the pedestal is a metal plate, with the following inscription:
