YWCA, Phyllis Wheatley Branch was originally constructed in 1928 and was used by Women's Christian Association. It was purchased in 1941 by the YWCA and became the Phyllis Wheatley Branch. Since then, it has offered support especially to thousands of African-American women and youth. Eventually, as the building started to show its age, maintenance became increasingly expensive and ineffective. The building was closed in 1994. Through a community task force the building was spared demolition and was restored starting in 2002 and reopening in 2003 as low income apartments.
