The Pony Express operated for 18 months, in 1860-1861. Young, orphaned teens were recruited as riders. They rode relays from pack station to pack station, until the advent of the telegraph.
They brought news of Lincoln's election from St. Joseph, MO in record time - minus 4 days. Mail was carried in mochilla/saddlebags.
The artist was Thomas Holland 1917 - 2004. It was cast in 1968.
