Formerly the site of a slave market, the square was renamed "Independence Square" when St. Kitts & Nevis gained political Independence from Britain on 19th September 1983.
The park is bounded by North, East, South and West Independence Streets. It features a beautiful central fountain and many old trees.
The text of the sign says:
"Created as a place of relaxation in the 1730's Pall Mall Square became a market place where enslaved Africans sold their ware on Sunday. Surrounding buildings held warehouses where slaves were sold. In 1792 a court house was built and the square became the center of administration. In 1983, it was renamed Independence Square."
