Close to the Hauptwache is the sculpture "David und Goliath" by sculptor Richard Heß. The bronze figure is slightly lowered so that pedestrians look at the sculpture from a higher angle. The bronze figure has with its 4.60 meters in height and a weight of 6 tons impressive proportions.
David sits on the severed head of Goliath. He wears a helmet on his head and is holding a slingshot in hand. The figures are intended to represent the culture and civilization (David) and, in contrast, the crude nature (Goliath). Goliath's head rests on a highly rugged surface that is supposed to represent a rock. On the pedestrian area of Zeil, with its strictly symmetrical arrangements of trees, lanterns and geometric paving stones, according to Hess, only a "form-rich" and "vital" plastic could contend.
David was, according to the books of Samuel an the Old Testament King of Judah and King of the United Kingdom of Israel. His life is conventionally dated to c. 1040–970 BC, his reign over Judah c. 1010–1002 BC, and his reign over the United Kingdoms of Israel c. 1002–970 BC.
