Marker Text:

LAFAYETTE COUNTY'S FIRST RAILROAD
In March 1872 Harvey Higgins deeded this two block strip of land to the Lexington and St. Louis Railroad stipulating that a depot be built here. The railroad was the first in the county and its depot was the nucleus of Higginsville. In 1880 the railroad became the Missouri pacific. It spurred the growth of this area and all of Lafayette County. The railroad tracks and depot were razed in the 1980's. A quitclaim deed was granted to this Society in 1991 so that the site could be marked as historic.
