[FR] Lors de son séjour parisien, entre mars 1886 et février 1888, Van Gogh habite avec son frère Théo dans la partie nord de la ville : rue de Laval d'abord, puis rue Lepic à partir de juin 1886. A la différence de certains impressionnistes qui, l'été, peuvent payer le prix même modique d'un voyage à la campagne, Vincent, par goût comme par nécessité, recherche plutôt des lieux proches de l'endroit où il habite. C'est justement le cas d'Asnières, ville située en bord de Seine, non loin des fortifications de Paris.
Style et sujet ont eu des précédents impressionnistes, pourtant le tableau s'en éloigne quelque peu. Il reflète plus l'apparence extérieure des bâtiments que les réjouissances conviviales dont ils étaient le cadre. Les impressionnistes, Renoir surtout, ont souvent représenté des restaurants, mais en privilégiant l'ambiance intérieure.
Dans Le restaurant de la Sirène, Van Gogh multiplie les touches de blanc tout en utilisant pleinement la richesse de sa palette. Le peintre Emile Bernard faisait d'ailleurs sans doute allusion à une représentation du restaurant de la Sirène quand il rapporte à Vollard que la production parisienne de Van Gogh comprend des "restaurants pimpants aux stores multicolores, aux lauriers roses". Si cette toile compte parmi les peintures de Van Gogh les plus proches de l'impressionnisme, il y multiplie les hachures parallèles, laissant ainsi pressentir un style plus personnel qui atteindra bientôt sa plénitude. [EN] Émile Bernard is believed to be referring to the The Restaurant de la Sirène at Asnières when he recounted to Vollard that some of the Van Gogh's Paris works featured "smart restaurants decorated with colored awnings and oleanders".
Asnières (paintings), now named Asnières-sur-Seine, is the subject and location of paintings that Vincent van Gogh made in 1887. The works, which include parks, restaurants, riverside settings and factories, mark a break-through in Van Gogh's artistic development.
The spring of 1887 Van Gogh stayed with Émile Bernard and his parents in Asnières and the budding spring seemed to trigger an awakening within Van Gogh where he experimented with the genres to develop his personal style. In a country setting, undergoing industrialization, Van Gogh was able to depict his reverence for rural life and express concern about encroachment of industrialization.
Longing for tranquil settings, Van Gogh began to paint in Asnières in April 1887 where fellow artists Paul Signac and Émile Bernard lived. Beyond the city fortifications and along the banks of the Seine, lay Asnières and the island of Grand Jatte. He experimented with a lighter, more colorful palette than used in his early Montmartre and Dutch paintings.
