The painting was painted North East of the bridge looking South West. The artist would probably have been on the first floor of the hotel to be able to see the road surface across the bridge.

Alfred East was born in Kettering in 1844. He studied at Glasgow School of Art. He shared an exhibition with TC Gotch and W Ayerst Ingram in 1888 at the Fine Art Society. In 1889 he was commissioned to paint the landscape and people of Japan. The exhibition of paintings from that commission was a significant success. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1899, and full membership in 1913.

In 1906 he was elected President of the Royal Society of British Artists, and published “The Art of Landscape Painting in Oil Colour”. He was awarded a knighthood in 1910. In 1913 the Alfred East Gallery was opened in Kettering. Shortly afterwards he died, laying in state in the Art Gallery.
