THE STEIGLITZ GOLD MINING BOOM
Steiglitz, situated in the Brisbane Ranges between Geelong and Ballarat, flourished when gold was discovered here in the 1850s. By the 1860s there were over 1500 residents in the town which by then boasted four hotels, several churches, a newspaper, a variety of shops, a courthouse and a post office. The gold rush declined in the 1870s, then enjoyed a short revival in the 1890s. The last gold mine in the town closed in 1941 - Steiglitz is now a deserted ghost town with only the historic courthouse and a few other relics remaining.
The Steiglitz Historic Park, covering an area of 469ha, was proclaimed in 1979.

FOSSICKING
There is a fossicking zone here which complements the historic gold mining theme of the Steiglitz Historic Park. The geology is described as slate beds and granite intrusions in folded Ordovician sediments which contain gold in quartz reefs.
Fossicking and panning for gold is allowed by the Victorian State Government in a designated area along the Sutherland Creek, from the Meredith Road bridge in Steiglitz to a distance 1 kilometre downstream in a south-westerly direction.
Fossicking is restricted to the use of hand tools, which may include picks, shovels, panning dishes and portable cradles. A miner’s right (obtainable from the Geelong City Council) is required.
Prospectors are requested to stay within the creek bed and to protect the creek-bank environment.
Please report the discovery of any other mining relics to Victoria Parks staff for assessment.
