The Palavas lagoon ponds are a combination of a string of ponds and wetlands that extend behind a barrier beach, a distance of about 25 km from Palavas-les-Flots and Frontignan.
September lagoons, salt or brackish water and covering 4,000 hectares, are included in the site: Mejean, Greek, Arnel, Prévost, Vic, Peter White and Ingril. These lagoons, called "ponds" has always are characterized by surfaces, depths, salinities and different operations. These lagoons are separated from the sea by a coastal bank, a dune environment and beaches. They are bordered by 2000 acres of wetlands, called peripheral, such as salt marshes.
The site is a critical habitat for birds during the migration period, in particular for the Caspian tern (Sterna caspia) and White Stork (Ciconia ciconia), but also during the breeding season for the Little Tern (Sterna albifrons, over 80% of the population in France) and Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber roseus).
