Havelterberg is a small village in the municipality of Westerveld between Havelte and Steenwijk , in the Dutch province of Drenthe.
On the border of Darp and Havelterberg be found remains of a US nuclear base. A watchtower serves as a reminder monument.
Between 1961 and 1992 there were (very likely) nuclear warheads stored for the Dutch field artillery. First there were heads of the
"Honest John"rocket, later for the "Lance' rocket.
The Lance rocket could be equipped with the W70 warhead-(neutron bomb).
In 't Harde was (most likely) a similar weapon storage (SAS Doornspijk). Even when there were regular peace actions, as the (now defunct) Soesterberg .
The total strength of the arsenal in Havelterberg was about 80 times greater than the Hiroshima bomb.
The inner ring of the base was guarded by American soldiers, the outer ring by the Dutch (434 Cie. Van Heutsz). At threat could be shot with live ammunition.
The warheads were maintained and monitored by 8th US Army Field Artillery Detachment (8th USAFAD). The actual firing of the heads was left to the departments Field Artillery Joh. Post Kazerne in Havelte (including 129 Afdva).
