Text of historic marker on left side of building:

HISTORIC BUILDING circa 1895
117 FIRST ST.

From 1895 to 1913 Holly Brothers Restau-
rant was here. They had a waiting room for
ladies in front and a dining room being cut
off by a row of palms. In 1904 the rear half
was added facing the Mo. Pacific Depot
enabling the restaurant to cater to the
railroad traffic. In 1915 it had something
new in town "A Mechanical Phonograph".
Arched openings from 113 to 117 gave
Pleasant Hill one of the country's first
enclosed malls. It has been an ice
cream parlor, cigar store, confectionary
bus station, watch repair and a drug store.
From 1936-47, it then became a variety store
and later a restaurant operated by Blake
and Mary Lou Sloan current owners.

DOWNTOWN ASSOCIATION 1992

The building is in good repair and is occupied by a restaurant.
Date of Construction: c. 1885

This brick one-part commercial block has a rectangular footprint. The front elevation is three bays wide. Storefront fenestration defines the bays and includes a recessed entrance flanked by two aluminum-framed plate glass windows that rest on brick bulkheads. Wood shingles cover the storefront transom window, above which is a pent roof. The storefront configuration is not original and dates to a circa 1940 alteration that has gained significance in its own right.

Although non-historic materials cover the transom, this building retains sufficient architectural integrity to convey its historic associations. It is a contributing element to the historic district.
