Most folks agree that you wouldn't say it's in a "banister." Simply approach the north entrance, get in front of the Texas Historical Marker for the Van Zandt County Courthouse, and look down to your right (west). The disk is fairly close to the courthouse wall, easy to locate.

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1948 IN CANTON. AT CANTON, AT THE COURTHOUSE, 10.0 FEET WEST OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE NORTH ENTRANCE, 1.1 FEET NORTH OF THE NORTH WALL AND SET IN THE TOP OF THE LIMESTONE BANISTER AT THE WEST SIDE OF THE NORTH ENTRANCE.
