EN: The Kastel Cave is located on the eastern flank of Kaltbrunnentals in the municipality of Himmelried. The cave is only a few meters deep, but very spacious. 1948, traces of human settlement were discovered in the cave, utensils made of flint and animal bones. A closer examination in 1949/50 could assign the different findings to two different cultures. The oldest relics come from Neanderthals and are about 35,000 years old, the middle layer is about 16,000 years old. So these are the oldest traces of human beings in the canton of Solothurn.
DE: Die Kastelhöhle befindet sich an der Ostflanke des Kaltbrunnentals auf dem Gemeidegebiet von Himmelried. Die Höhle ist nur einige Meter tief, aber sehr geräumig. 1948 wurden in der Höhle Spuren von menschlicher Besiedlung entdeckt, Gebrauchsgegenstände aus Feuerstein und Tierknochen. Eine genauere Untersuchung 1949/50 konnte die verschiedenen Fundstücke zwei verschiedenen Kulturen zuweisen. Die ältesten Relikte stammen von Neandertalern und sind etwa 35'000 Jahre alt, die mittlere Schicht ist etwa 16'000 Jahre alt. Es handelt sich sommit um die ältesten Spuren von Menschen im Kanton Solothurn.
