Located north of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church is a lovely two-story home built in 1904. It was the residence of the first Catholic Bishop of Oklahoma, the Most Reverend Theophile Meerschaert. The home is a Contributing Building to the Gatewood West Historic District, placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
In front of the home is a concrete pillar with two bronze plaques. The first is a round seal of the City of Oklahoma City Historical Preservation Landmark Commission. The second is a rectangular plaque reading:
ORIGINAL BISHOP'S RESIDENCE / This original Catholic Bishop's residence was constructed in 1904 in accordance with plans laid out by The Most Reverend Theophile Meerschaert, first Bishop of Oklahoma. Bishop Meerschaert lived here until he died in 1924, followed by Bishop Francis Kelley who remained until 1932 when he moved into an apartment in the then-new southwest wing of St. Anthony Hospital.
