The orientation table and map describe how Navajo Lake was formed when a prehistoric lava flow dammed the east side of the valley. Water seeps through natural sinkholes in the lake bottom. It travels in a complex series of underground channels, old lava flow tubes, to emerge as creeks and springs, both near and far away.
According to the information table, the dike that now forms the east end of the lake was built by the Civilian Conservation Crops.
