Founded in 1750, it was probably frequented by Camille and Lucile Desmoulins, who lived next door prior to their arrest; described by Balzac in 1827 in a philosophical study, "The martyrs ignored." During the last years of the Second Empire, Gambetta and his friends loved to meet there. Around 1880, the "Grand Café-Restaurant Voltaire" was made figure of politics and literature: Verlaine left debts, André Gide, Jean Moréas, Anatole France, Alfred Vallette Rachilde.
Later, it became the favorite haunt of the Symbolist poets, Mallarme alongside Gauguin "wearing a beret, wearing a nameless Inverness cape and wearing wooden carved shoes".
