The student is sitting on the edge of the roof of the Large Guildhall (Liela Gilde). His left leg is crossed over his right knee, with his left ankle resting on top of his right knee. The book is open and resting atop his bent left knee and he is holding onto the book with his left arm and hand. He is scratching his head with his right hand while reading the book with a confused look on his face. This life-size stone statue was created by August Volz, a German-Latvian sculptor from Riga.
