There is a small complex of a number of buildings and permanent telescopes. The following groups helped build or maintain this complex, Southeastern Iowa Astronomy Club, Des Moines County Conservation Board, the Burlington Community School District, and the John H. Witte Foundation.

Buildings and Equipement:
The complex is actually three different observatories, John H. Witte Observatory (12 inch Alvan Clark and Sons refractor), Prugh-Carver observatory (eight inch refractor), Stone-Kelly observatory (16 inch Ealing Optical classical).There are also pads and power outlets for smaller portable scopes.

The area/grounds are actually part of the Big Hollow Creek Rec Area, a Des Moines County conservation park near Burlington.

The club generally has the observatory open to the public every first and third Fridays of each month. A tentative schedule and contact info can be found

Visit Instructions:Note the time of day of your visit, and your own photo of your favorite part of the observatory. This might be the view from the observatory, picture of your favorite building or favorite exhibit. (Be mindful of flash photography rules!)
