In April of 1996, 7-year-old Jessica Dubroff (she would have turned 8 the next month) was at the center of a nationwide media frenzy as she attempted to become the youngest person to fly an airplane across the United States, from Half Moon Bay, California, to the East Coast.
She flew a Cessna Cardinal 177B, with her flight instructor Joe Reid alongside her, and her father, Lloyd Dubroff, as a passenger in the rear. After the group's third stopover in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the plane took off in heavy rain and strong winds, and shortly thereafter crashed in a nearby neighborhood, killing all on board.
This is a tiny memorial on Kornegay Court, just a block away from a major north-south street, Yellowstone Road. It's on the north side of the street in a manicured grass area between the sidewalk and a large parking lot for a bank. I can't say for sure exactly how close the memorial is to the actual crash location, but the crash is known to have taken place on Kornegay Court, which is barely two blocks long.

Second Memorial Text:
HIGH FLIGHT
By John Gillespie Magee Jr.
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling
mirth of sun-split clouds, And done a hundred things
you have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and
swung high in the sunlight silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting winds along, and flung my
eager craft through footless halls of air. Up, up the
long, delirious, burning blue I’ve topped the
windswept heights with easy grace where never lark,
nor even eagle flew — And, while with silent, lifting
mind I've trod the high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God."
Of note is that the Dubroffs' name is misspelled (twice) on the first marker. "Sea to Shining Sea" was the name Reid and the Dubroffs gave to the flight. The second marker is a well-known poem by a British-American aviator and poet who died in a collision in World War II.
